An experienced provider of ketamine treatments in Portland, Rainfall Medicine doesn’t see addiction, PTSD, depression, anxiety and chronic pain as pathologies. Rather, they are journeys that can lead to discovery, reconnection and healing. We work with patients to find meaning in their suffering and overcome their past. By fostering a reconnection to themselves and others, they can heal in community. For many, these healing journeys lead to finding one’s life purpose.
When we overcome the stigma and judgment of addiction, mental illness, and trauma, we can treat ourselves and others with empathy and compassion. With less shame and blame, recovery from any type of affliction can happen more easily and we can move into a state of grace and wellbeing.
Ketamine for Depression
Depression remains a common and disabling condition that affects millions. Both psychotherapy and antidepressant medications are helpful and, at times, recommended therapies. However, for some there is an inadequate response and lack of remission despite multiple trials using different medications. Many patients find the side effects of antidepressants to be unpleasant or even intolerable. Additionally, many of these medications have a delay of several weeks before a response is achieved.
For over a decade, there had been no new pharmacologic therapies for depression. However, in 2000 ketamine was found to have potent antidepressant properties and for some patients these effects were rapid in onset, on the order of hours. Ketamine can have a robust effect in patients with treatment-resistant mood disorders comparable to electro-convulsant therapy (ECT) but with fewer cognitive side effects. Several randomized controlled studies of ketamine have shown that it produces a quick and sometimes very profound response in patients unresponsive to other standard treatments for depression. Director of the National Institute of Mental Health Thomas Insel states, “Recent data suggest that ketamine, given intravenously, might be the most important breakthrough in antidepressant treatment in decades.”
